Mini bio

Before the microphone.

Peter trained as a physician before building his public work around longevity. After medical school at Stanford, he spent five years training in general surgery at Johns Hopkins and two years as a surgical oncology fellow at the National Cancer Institute, researching immune-based treatments for melanoma.

Learning in public.

His 2013 TEDMED talk questioned assumptions about obesity and diabetes, drawing on his experience with a patient and a later health scare of his own. In 2018, he launched The Drive to share the kinds of detailed conversations he wanted to have with scientists and other experts.

From conversations to Outlive.

Published on March 28, 2023, Outlive, written with Bill Gifford, brought his approach to prevention, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and emotional health into book form. It became a #1 New York Times bestseller. His continuing work includes The Drive and Early Medical, the practice he founded to focus on lifespan and healthspan.
