Mini bio

Food from home.

Rachel grew up in north London, surrounded by Caribbean, African and Welsh food traditions. After giving up dairy, a documentary about animal agriculture prompted an overnight move to vegan eating. Rachel began recreating familiar flavours with plants, including jerk oyster mushrooms and jackfruit “tuna” pasta.

Weekends became a career.

Rachel started sharing YouTube recipes in September 2017. At the time, Rachel worked full-time designing and running an online gift shop, then developed recipes and filmed at weekends. In a first-person Vogue essay, Rachel recalled reaching 180,000 subscribers within 18 months and turning a love of vegan cooking into a career after getting a book deal.

Books and jars.

Rachel Ama’s Vegan Eats arrived in 2019 and won PETA UK’s Best Vegan Cookbook award. One Pot: Three Ways followed in 2021, offering three ways to serve or transform a plant-based centrepiece. Rachel later added a family recipe ebook and AMA’s Caribbean sauces, including Jerk Marinade and Sticky Miso Jerk.
