How it started.
Rand left the University of Washington in 2000 to work in web design. With the business in debt, Rand began the SEOmoz blog in 2003. Sharing what they learned about search became a path into software: Moz made that transition in 2007.
A familiar face at the whiteboard.
Many fans first met Rand through Moz’s Whiteboard Friday videos. When GeekWire invited Rand to its studio in 2018, they brought out a whiteboard for three startup lessons from Lost and Founder. The book draws on a business that began as a mother-and-son venture and questions familiar startup advice.
The next chapters.
Rand started SparkToro with Casey Henry in 2018 and launched Snackbar Studio in 2024. Today, the work spans audience research, mention tracking, and games. With Amanda Natividad, Rand also wrote Zero Click Marketing, a guide to reaching people on platforms that send fewer visitors to websites.
