Mini bio
How it started.
Rick grew up around the Hickory House, his family’s barbecue restaurant in Oklahoma City. He studied Spanish and Latin American studies, then pursued doctoral work in anthropological linguistics at the University of Michigan. Food and cultural curiosity eventually brought him and Deann to Mexico to research the regional cooking behind their first book.
Bringing the recipes home.
In 1987, Rick and Deann opened Frontera Grill in Chicago and published Authentic Mexican. The restaurant gave diners a place to explore the regional dishes they had studied. Cookbooks became another way for home cooks to get to know those flavors.
A familiar face in the kitchen.
Mexico: One Plate at a Time took Rick’s cooking lessons to public television for 12 seasons. In 2009, he won the first season of Top Chef Masters. Today, fans can follow his recipes on YouTube and Instagram, as well as through his books and Chicago restaurants.
Beyond the plate.
Rick and his team founded the Frontera Farmer Foundation in 2003 to support small Midwestern farms. His interests also reach the stage: he co-created and performed in Cascabel, mixing a meal with theater, music and physical performance.
