Mini bio
How it started.
Sam left a San Diego biotech job hoping to make travel television. After September 11 disrupted plans for a demo in Tokyo and Hong Kong, he switched to cooking. He had no culinary training or television experience.
The first break.
After industry experts rejected his demo, a local station gave him two-minute morning cooking segments. A year later, those became a half-hour show. His television work eventually reached Discovery Health.
Food for everyday life.
His books bring that practical approach home: Recipes with Intentional Leftovers, Between the Buns and The Holy Grill cover everything from reusing a cooked protein to sandwiches and backyard grilling.
A new chapter.
Sam also helped create San Diego restaurants. In January 2025, he announced that he was leaving his partnerships in Not Not Tacos, Samburgers and Basta. His recipe website continues to publish new dishes.
