Mini bio

How it started.

Samin was studying English at UC Berkeley when a detour into the kitchen at Chez Panisse changed her path. She went on to learn from Benedetta Vitali and Dario Cecchini in Italy and to cook at Eccolo in Berkeley, keeping food and writing side by side.

The four elements.

Her 2017 debut, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, taught cooking through four guiding elements, with illustrations by Wendy MacNaughton. It became a number-one New York Times bestseller and won a James Beard Award. In 2018, its Netflix adaptation followed her through Italy, Japan, Mexico, and California.

Keeping people company.

In 2020, Samin and her friend Hrishikesh Hirway started Home Cooking to help listeners cook during quarantine. Their first episode tackled beans with guest Josh Malina. Good Things followed in 2025, turning toward favorite recipes and the pleasure of sharing meals.

Trivia

  1. Away from work, she loves gardening, swimming, reading, and sleeping under the stars.
  2. Her first article in a national magazine was a Thanksgiving lasagna recipe for Martha Stewart Living, according to the Home Cooking show notes.
  3. The focaccia recipe seen in her Netflix series was not in her first cookbook. She worked with Josey Baker and Laurie Ellen Pellicano to make it practical for home bakers.
