Mini bio
How it started.
Scott grew up with a single mother and has written about the financial insecurity of his childhood. UCLA initially rejected him, then admitted him after an appeal. He credits his mother and public education with opening the door to the life that followed.
Building and teaching.
After working at Morgan Stanley, Scott earned an MBA at UC Berkeley. He founded brand consultancy Prophet in 1992, gift retailer RedEnvelope in 1997, and digital intelligence firm L2 in 2010. He joined NYU Stern in 2002, teaching brand strategy and digital marketing.
Finding an audience.
The Four, published in 2017, examined Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. In 2018, Scott joined Kara Swisher for Pivot, bringing business and technology analysis to an ongoing conversation. His books, No Mercy / No Malice newsletter, and Prof G podcasts now cover careers, money, relationships, and politics as well as companies.
The personal side.
The Algebra of Happiness turns his attention to work, love, and a meaningful life. Notes on Being a Man draws on his childhood and experience raising two boys. That mix of business analysis and personal reflection runs through his writing and conversations.
