Mini bio
How it started.
Growing up in New York, Steven was drawn to the models he saw in magazines and on the street. He studied fashion illustration at Parsons and worked as an illustrator for Halston and Women’s Wear Daily. Model test shoots led to work for Seventeen, opening a path into professional photography.
Finding his voice.
His partnership with editor Franca Sozzani became a defining part of Vogue Italia. His agency credits him with every cover and lead editorial from 1988 through 2014. The July 2008 Black Issue remains a key work, celebrating Black models while addressing the industry’s narrow casting habits.
People and transformation.
Meisel’s photographs helped shape the supermodel era, and his friendship with Madonna led to the photography for her 1992 book Sex. His collaboration with Linda Evangelista began in 1987. Their 2023 Phaidon book gathers more than 180 photographs made across twenty-five years.
Still making pictures.
Recent work moves between magazine covers, campaign photographs and films. In 2026, that included American Vogue, Zara, Versace, ALO and Dolce&Gabbana, alongside Photo London’s exhibition of his London portraits.
