Mini bio
How it started.
Born in Washington, D.C., Talia began photographing as a young teenager. Some of the negatives from those first photography classes later returned in exhibitions, alongside new pictures of the same family members. Talia earned a BFA in Chicago in 2004 and an MFA in Photography at RISD in 2008.
Finding the thread.
The pictures move between self-portraits, still lifes, street scenes and people close to Talia. In conversation with Dallas Contemporary, Talia described using personal life and an archive of images to discuss power dynamics. The camera and the situation it creates matter as much as the subject.
A wider view.
The 2018 Showcaller retrospective at Kölnischer Kunstverein brought different periods of the work together. MACK published the first photobook, also called Showcaller, in January 2019, combining photographs made from 1994 to 2018. JOKE followed in 2022, mixing family photographs, teenage archive material, still lifes and self-portraits.
Art and fashion.
Talia also photographs fashion campaigns, with clients including Phoebe Philo, Celine, Acne Studios, Loewe and Saint Laurent. Recent projects include Lorde’s What Was That single cover and Bunny, the 2026 Madrid exhibition. The gallery and commercial work sit within a career that keeps returning to identity, performance and the act of looking.
