Mini bio

How it started.

Jamie grew up in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. After playing in rock bands and spending time on London’s acoustic scene, he wanted more instruments to carry the emotion in his songs. The first Irrepressibles band began in 2002. In 2005 he assembled another version, with a larger orchestral palette, after placing an advert for musicians.

Finding their audience.

Mirror Mirror arrived in 2010, introducing the project’s orchestral sound and its best-known song, “In This Shirt”. Nude followed in 2012. Jamie described that second album as a way of telling his story as a gay man, bringing electronica into the world he had built on the debut.

Desire and community.

Superheroes followed in 2020, before Yo Homo! in 2024 brought distorted guitars and a more direct focus on queer desire. In 2025 Jamie expanded Yo Homo! with additional tracks and revised versions. Across the records, he treats genre as a way to express different emotions, from orchestral sorrow to visceral rock.

Beyond the project.

Jamie has also collaborated as a vocalist with Röyksopp, ionnalee and Tinlicker. His Röyksopp collaboration “Something in My Heart” was released in 2013 under the name Jamie Irrepressible.

Trivia

  2. After the first band ended, Jamie worked on a performance choir before putting together the next incarnation of The Irrepressibles.
  3. Before the deluxe Yo Homo release went onto CD, Jamie took the opportunity to revise tracks from its original digital edition.
