Mini bio

How it started.

Keller grew up working in restaurants in Palm Beach, Florida, moving from washing dishes to cooking. His official timeline places his first culinary position at the Palm Beach Yacht Club in 1974–76. He went on to work along the East Coast and train in French kitchens, including Taillevent and Guy Savoy.

Finding The French Laundry.

After opening Rakel in New York in 1986, Keller headed west. Raising the money to buy The French Laundry took 19 months. He took over the Yountville restaurant in 1994, and it became the center of a growing collection of kitchens, including Bouchon in 1998 and Per Se in 2004.

Bringing the kitchen home.

The French Laundry Cookbook arrived in 1999. Later books included Ad Hoc at Home and Bouchon Bakery, while MasterClass brought his teaching to an online audience with lessons on vegetables, eggs and pasta. In 2025, Chef’s Table: Legends devoted an episode to his life and work.

Passing it on.

Mentorship runs through Keller’s career. His official biography credits him with leading the U.S. team to its first Bocuse d’Or gold medal, achieved in 2017. Michelin recognized his work with its Mentor Chef Award in 2021.
