Mini bio

How it started.

Tom studied linguistics at the University of York and made comedy through university radio. In 2004, his spoof Preparing for Emergencies website attracted national attention when the Cabinet Office asked for its removal. He went on to work in web development and television, including presenting Gadget Geeks on Sky One in 2012.

The weekly habit.

He created his YouTube channel in 2006, then found a wider audience with Things You Might Not Know from 2014. His videos followed questions about language, science, technology and unusual places. After ten years of weekly uploads, he stepped away from that schedule in January 2024.

Questions and company.

Alongside his factual work, Tom makes comedy with The Technical Difficulties and hosts Lateral. The podcast began in October 2022, with guests working through questions whose answers need a change of perspective. Its 2024 book pairs Tom with question producer David Bodycombe.

Back on the road.

In March 2026, Tom launched Tom Scott: England. The project takes viewers through the historic English counties, finding a story in each. He filmed the journey over about eight weeks and more than 5,000 miles, then returned to weekly releases on Nebula and YouTube.
