How it started.
Will grew up in West Philadelphia and first found an audience as the Fresh Prince, rapping alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff. Their storytelling songs brought hip-hop into everyday family life, and “Parents Just Don’t Understand” won a Grammy in 1989.
From rap to television.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air began in 1990, making his rapper persona the starting point for a sitcom about a Philadelphia teenager living with wealthy relatives in California. Film roles followed, including Agent Jay opposite Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black.

His work spans acting, producing, music and his own video channel. He wrote the memoir Will with Mark Manson in 2021 and played Richard Williams in King Richard, earning the 2022 Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role.
The latest chapter.
In 2025 he returned to album-making with Based on a True Story, his first full-length release since Lost and Found. In an AP interview, he described the music as a way to examine himself after the backlash to slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. His 2026 series Pole to Pole takes that curiosity across seven continents.
