Mini bio
A daughter’s request.
WoonHeng began sharing recipes on Instagram after her daughter asked her to write them down so she could cook them when living on her own. Readers later asked for a blog and YouTube channel to make the dishes easier to follow and share.
Flavors of home.
She grew up in Kuala Lumpur, where Malaysian food and the city’s mix of cultures shaped her cooking. Her publisher also credits lessons from her mothers and time volunteering in a temple kitchen. She has lived in Texas and Sichuan, China, and her current publisher biography places her back in Malaysia.
An audience around the table.
Her short cooking videos helped bring her recipes to a wider audience. A 2023 South China Morning Post profile singled out her chili oil tutorial, creamy miso ramen and vegan dumplings as viewer favorites.
From posts to a cookbook.
Published by Avery in June 2026, The Vegan Asian Kitchen brings together plant-based versions of dishes from Malaysia, China, Thailand and beyond. Family stories sit alongside recipes for nasi lemak, potstickers, mapo tofu and homemade condiments.
