Mini bio

How it started.

Yolanda grew up loving baking, inspired by her baker father. At George Brown College in Toronto, she found herself drawn to baking more than cooking. Bakery jobs taught her the foundations; she explored fondant and sculpting at home, then built a custom-cake business.

Finding her audience.

After appearing on SugarStars in 2012, Yolanda teamed up with producers Connie Contardi and Jocelyn Mercer for How To Cake It in 2015. YouTube gave her room to make the cakes she had been dreaming about, including a watermelon made from pink velvet cake with chocolate-chip seeds.

Sharing the craft.

Her teaching grew into books and classes. How to Cake It: A Cakebook focuses on novelty cakes, while Layer Up! explores cakes filled with other desserts. Television brought another way to share her experience, judging Crime Scene Kitchen and, later, Sweet Empire: Winter Wars.
