Mini bio
How it started.
Zeb grew up in a family that loved singing. At Mount Holyoke College, she began making music with her cousin Haniya Aslam, who attended nearby Smith College. Their song “Chup” began in an abandoned café in a dorm basement. They uploaded early songs for friends, then discovered their music was reaching Pakistani radio.
Finding an audience.
Zeb & Haniya released Chup! in July 2008. Their Coke Studio collaborations helped carry the duo’s music beyond Pakistan. Zeb went on to sing “Ajnabi” for Madras Cafe, “Sooha Saaha” for Highway and “Haminastu” for Fitoor, as well as Pakistani television soundtracks including Diyar-e-Dil.
Following her curiosity.
As her solo work grew, Zeb deepened her study with Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami. She also formed Sandaraa with clarinetist Michael Winograd and fellow Brooklyn musicians, exploring connections between South Asian, Central Asian and Eastern European traditions. Her composing work includes the songs for Lipstick Under My Burkha.
Sharing the craft.
Her recent projects include the Firdaus Orchestra EP Zebunnisa In Firdaus and a judging role on Pakistan Idol. In interviews, she describes musical growth as a continuing practice of learning and listening.
