Mini bio
How it started.
Raised in Columbus, Mississippi, Rush learned about food and hospitality from his mother. His father instilled a work ethic that he carried into military life. He began as a reservist and moved into active Army service in July 1993.
A career in service.
Rush retired as a master sergeant after a career that included culinary work, leadership, and mentoring other service members. His assignments included serving as senior enlisted aide to the superintendent at West Point, and his cooking took him to the White House and the Presidential Guest House.
The photo that changed things.
In 2018, a photograph of Rush cooking at the White House brought his muscular arms to an audience far beyond the kitchen. He used that attention to talk about veterans, mental health, and fitness. He says his daily 2,222 push-ups are an act of suicide-prevention awareness.

His 2022 memoir, Call Me Chef, Dammit!, tells the longer story behind the viral image, including his experience at the Pentagon on September 11 and living with PTSD. In 2023 he began hosting Kitchen Commando, a Studio Ramsay Global series about helping struggling restaurants around Washington, D.C.
