Mini bio

How it started.

Before How To Cook That, Ann worked in the food industry and in community and public-health dietetics, then became a youth pastor. Teaching young people to cook and repeatedly writing out recipes gave her the idea for a blog. In 2011, she began building it while staying awake for night feeds with her third son.

Desserts that found an audience.

Her videos began as a way to demonstrate recipes on the blog. YouTube could hold files that were too large for her website, so she uploaded them there and embedded them in her posts. Elaborate projects such as the Instagram mousse cake and oversized candy bars helped the channel grow. By her January 2015 Tubefilter interview, it had passed one million subscribers.

Following the science.

Alongside desserts and miniature baking, Ann tests viral recipes and food hacks, showing what works and examining misleading claims. Her 2026 videos range from chocolate and allulose to 3D-printed kitchen gadgets and ice-cream machines.

Recipes to keep.

In 2021, Ann published Crazy Sweet Creations, a cookbook that pairs dessert recipes with explanations of the science behind them. In her ckbk interview, she described finding an 1805 cookbook on her mother’s shelf and how researching old cookbooks helped inspire her own.

Trivia

  1. Her first handwritten recipe was a chocolate cheesecake she asked a friend’s mother to share.
  2. Corrupted footage from her phone made the Instagram dessert video difficult to edit, including its short reveal of the cake’s interior.
  3. The antique cookbook discussed in her ckbk interview was The Housekeeper’s Instructor by William Augustus Henderson, in an 1805 edition.
