How it started.
Ashley grew up in Nebraska and was scouted while shopping at a mall in Omaha at 12. In a personal essay for TIME, Ashley recalled flying to New York modeling jobs with their mom and returning to school on Mondays. Encouragement from their mom helped them keep going when the pressure of modeling became difficult.
Changing the picture.
The 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover made Ashley the first plus-size model on the issue’s cover. That breakthrough sits alongside a wider body of work about self-acceptance, including the 2015 TEDx talk Plus-size? More like my size and the 2017 memoir A New Model, written with Rebecca Paley.

Pretty Big Deal brought Ashley’s conversations about identity, confidence and everyday life into podcasting. A Kids Book About Beauty took the message to younger readers in 2024. Fans can also find fashion, skincare, motherhood and behind-the-scenes stories in The Inner Circle newsletter.
