Mini bio
How it started.
Ben grew up in Portsmouth and worked in hospitality, including washing dishes at a sailing club. A meal at Phil Howard’s The Square in 2013 helped steer him towards a cooking career. He went on to cook in the UK, USA and Australia, and spent time learning butchery in Sussex.
Finding his audience.
While furloughed during the pandemic, he started a WordPress blog and began making Instagram videos as @dinnerbyben. His audience grew through his work at Mob, where he moved from filming hands and pans to speaking directly to the camera. He also worked as assistant food editor at Waitrose magazine.
Helping you understand the why.
His How I Cook newsletter brings restaurant experience into the home kitchen through recipes and explanations of technique. The cookbook of the same name followed in September 2025 and became a Sunday Times bestseller. His focus is on helping readers understand how cooking works so they can use those skills beyond a single recipe.
Beyond the home kitchen.
Ben also founded Dr Sting’s Hot Honey. In 2026 he launched Stage, returning to restaurant kitchens to work shifts on camera. With his wife, music promoter Louisa Lippett, he co-founded Pears For Lunch, bringing meals and live music together.
