Mini bio
How it started.
Ben’s route into cooking began with a weekend job in a pub. After studying Food Technology at A-level, he took a degree in Culinary Arts Management at University College Birmingham, graduating in 2009. He told Palatinate that seeing what his friends ate at university inspired him to share simple ways to cook better.
Cooking with mates.
In 2010, Ben started Sorted Food with school friends Mike Huttlestone, Jamie Spafford and Barry Taylor. His chef training became part of the group’s appeal: friends could ask questions, make mistakes and learn together. Their early student cookbooks led to Beginners Get ... Sorted, published by Penguin in 2012.
Finding an audience.
By March 2014, Sorted Food had been ranked fourth in The Guardian’s digital-media “30 under 30” list. Ben’s university celebrated the recognition and his approach to making cooking a shared conversation. Today, Sorted’s own team page says he oversees its Food team and speaks about food trends, sustainability and online communities.
Beyond the studio.
Ben also brings that curiosity to podcasts and public talks. In 2026 he joined David Weitz at the Royal Institution to explore culinary science. Sorted Food’s work received a team honour that year: a People’s Voice Webby for its London chefs’ broth experiment.
