How it started.
Born in New York City and raised in River Vale, New Jersey, Bill Maher graduated from Cornell before building a stand-up career in New York. Hosting at Catch a Rising Star in 1979 gave him an early break.
Finding his format.
Politically Incorrect, which he hosted from 1993 to 2002 on Comedy Central and ABC, brought his comedy into a political talk-show setting. In 2003 he began Real Time on HBO, combining stand-up, guest interviews, panel debates and the closing New Rules segment.

Maher wrote, produced and starred in the 2008 documentary Religulous, directed by Larry Charles. He also worked behind the camera as an executive producer of Vice, earning an Emmy in 2014.
