Mini bio

How it started.

Courtney baked her first cake from scratch at 26 for her son’s first birthday. It did not look the way she had hoped, but she loved the taste and kept experimenting. She taught herself through trial and error, then began Cake by Courtney in 2015.

Finding her audience.

Before cakes became her work, Courtney studied broadcast journalism at BYU and spent 13 years moderating focus groups for a television consulting firm. Cake by Courtney grew into a place for home bakers to learn recipes and decorating techniques, with classes at Orson Gygi and appearances on shows including Today and The Kelly Clarkson Show.

On the bookshelf.

Her first cookbook, CAKE, by Courtney, focuses on layered cakes and their fillings and frostings. BAKE, by Courtney follows with everyday desserts such as cookies, bars, tarts and sheet cakes. For 2026’s The Cookie Chapter, she partnered with her mom, Diana Pace, on a book devoted to cookies.

Beyond the kitchen.

In 2020, she launched Courtney: Beyond the Cake, an interview podcast about people’s stories. She has also spoken in interviews about learning from failure and how baking became a source of joy.
