Mini bio

How it started.

Born in Sukhumi, Georgia, Demna became interested in clothes while growing up in the Soviet Union, where choice was limited. After studying economics in Tbilisi, they trained in fashion in Antwerp and worked at Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton.

Finding a voice.

Demna launched Vetements in 2014. The label’s breakthrough came with a 2015 show at the Paris club Le Dépôt, bringing stretched proportions and familiar wardrobe pieces into a new setting. Demna described the approach as building a wardrobe, rather than designing around a seasonal theme.

A decade at Balenciaga.

Named Balenciaga’s artistic director in 2015, Demna brought utilitarian clothes into the house’s design language. In July 2021, the 50th Couture Collection marked their first couture collection for Balenciaga and the reopening of its couture chapter. The final collection followed in July 2025.

The Gucci chapter.

Demna joined Gucci in July 2025. La Famiglia introduced that chapter through characters and their wardrobes; Primavera brought it onto the runway in February 2026. In interviews, Demna has described a growing interest in fashion that feels intuitive and emotional.
