Mini bio

How it started.

John grew up in Lancashire and began baking with his mum as a child. In his own account for Mind, he described the kitchen as a place to settle his thoughts, first during childhood and later when he left home for university.

From the tent to the classroom.

He won the third series of The Great British Bake Off in 2012, the year he completed a first-class law degree at the University of Manchester. He then trained in pâtisserie at Le Cordon Bleu London and went on to teach, write recipes and work on television.

Books and the ballroom.

His books span home baking, simple meals and comfort food, followed by the 2023 memoir Dancing on Eggshells. In 2021, he and Johannes Radebe became Strictly Come Dancing’s first all-male partnership and finished as runners-up.

Back to the bakery.

John now runs Ruff Puff with his husband Paul Atkins. After closing the first Cedar Farm shop in January 2026, he returned that October with larger premises and a team to share the work. He also told Wigan Today that his Camino de Santiago fundraising walk had raised £40,000 for suicide prevention.
