Mini bio
How it started.
Kim-Joy grew up in London after moving from Belgium at five. She studied sociology in Bristol and a master’s in psychology in Leeds, then worked in caring and mental health roles. Baking became a way to bring friends, family and colleagues together.
Into the tent.
Her 2018 Bake Off run brought her detailed animal bakes to a wider audience. She won Star Baker twice and reached the final, with creations including space turtles and a lavender and lemon fox cake. Afterwards, she said the experience had helped her confidence grow.
Beyond the baking tray.
Her books carry that character-filled style into home kitchens, from Bake Me a Cat to Bake Joy. She also writes fiction: Turtle Bread, illustrated by Alti Firmansyah, follows a socially anxious newcomer to a baking club. The pair reunited for Quiet in 2026. Ordinary Joy brings her personal reflections into a self-help book.
Giving something back.
Kim-Joy is an ambassador for The Wren Bakery, a Leeds charity that helps women facing disadvantage build skills through baking. Her own newsletter combines recipes with personal writing about subjects including social anxiety and autism.
