Mini bio
How it started.
Simbiatu Ajikawo grew up in Islington. She told Song Exploder that she began performing at about nine and started releasing music at around 14 or 15. Early mixtapes led to her debut album, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons, in 2015, supported by PRS Foundation’s Momentum Music Fund.
Finding her audience.
GREY Area brought a wider breakthrough in 2019, with songs including Offence, Boss and Venom. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert followed in 2021, expanding her sound with orchestral arrangements, Cleo Sol, Obongjayar and spoken interludes from Emma Corrin. It won the 2022 Mercury Prize; that year, Simz also received the BRIT Award for Best New Artist.
More ways to tell a story.
Her screen work includes Spirit Warriors, Youngers and Netflix’s Top Boy. In 2025 she appeared as Shola in Steve. Music kept moving too: NO THANK YOU arrived in 2022, Lotus in 2025 and the four-track Sugar Girl EP in 2026.
