Mini bio
How it started.
Yulia grew up in Tokyo and began making music in a band before becoming a DJ. Their label biography traces those early influences from punk to technopop, including the Clash and Kraftwerk. Yulia also organized parties under the name Neon Spread, which became the title of the debut DJ mix in 2008.
From clubs to records.
The Neon Spread mix introduced Yulia to Tokyo’s electro scene. In 2011, Yulia opened for Kylie Minogue in Japan and released Mademoworld, with VERBAL as executive producer. Whatever Harajuku followed in 2013, with Yulia contributing lyrics and composition.
A wardrobe built around kimono.
After graduating from Kyoto University of the Arts in 2020, Yulia began working as a kimono stylist, including styling campaign imagery for the V&A exhibition Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk. Today that work extends to kimono dressing classes, the KOTOWA fashion label, books, columns and the weekly YouTube channel Yulia’s Room.
