Mini bio
How it started.
Marie’s interest in organizing began with her mother’s homemaking magazines when she was five. As a 19-year-old university student in Tokyo, she turned that fascination into a tidying consultancy. Her KonMari Method grew around choosing the belongings people want to keep because they bring joy.
From books to living rooms.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up reached English-language readers in 2014 and became a number-one New York Times bestseller. Her Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo followed in 2019, bringing her approach to families navigating changes in their lives.
Beyond the wardrobe.
Sparking Joy took her approach into the balance between work, home and relationships in 2021. She was an executive producer of the series, which won a Daytime Emmy in 2022. Her later books include Letter from Japan, about the cultural traditions behind her philosophy, and Whispering Rooms, a fiction collaboration with Genki Kawamura.
