Mini bio

How it started.

Mateo arrived in London from Poland with clothes for a two-week trip and ended up working at Mishkins, a Jewish deli in Soho. He had barely cooked before, but felt at home in the kitchen and stayed. His own website remembers The Sopranos Family Cookbook as the one cookbook he owned, a birthday present when he was 17.

Finding his people.

He bought a pasta machine and practised at home. During the pandemic, his short videos of striped ravioli and hand-shaped pasta reached a much wider audience. Fine Dining Lovers describes him filming in his conservatory with a bedsheet to soften the light. His followers gave him the nickname The Pasta Man.

From the feed to the kitchen.

After working at restaurants including Padella and Polpo, he became head chef at London’s 180 Studios, where he also has a pasta studio. Teaching runs through his work, from social videos and classes to three cookbooks: The Pasta Man, Pasta Masterclass and Pasta Pronto. The books move from colourful doughs and detailed shaping to meals that fit into a busy day.
