Mini bio

How it started.

Maurizio grew up around his dad’s pizzeria in Albuquerque, with family food traditions continuing through summers in Italy. He later studied computer science and worked in software. A Christmas gift from his aunt, the Tartine bread book, drew him into baking sourdough at home.

Learning in public.

He began The Perfect Loaf to document his experiments and help other home bakers learn alongside him. His current official biography dates the site’s founding to 2012. Detailed recipes and guides became its calling card, and Saveur Blog Awards in 2016 and 2018 brought recognition.

From blog to bookshelf.

His first cookbook, The Perfect Loaf, arrived in 2022 and became a New York Times bestseller. It won James Beard and IACP book awards in 2023. He also contributes to New York Times Cooking and teaches through baking workshops and small-group trips. His second cookbook, The Perfect Pizza, is scheduled for November 10, 2026.
