Mini bio
How it started.
Colleen Ballinger began posting Miranda Sings videos in 2008. The character grew out of her observations of overconfident performers and early YouTube singing videos. In a 2014 interview, Ballinger said she originally wanted somewhere to share silly videos with friends.
From bedrooms to theatres.
Miranda’s “Free Voice Lesson” became a breakout in 2009. As the video circulated among theatre performers, Ballinger received invitations to turn the character into a live cabaret act. Miranda’s deliberately bad singing, oversized confidence and red lipstick became the centre of the joke.
Books and Netflix.
Miranda’s advice moved onto the page with Selp-Helf in 2015, a New York Times number-one bestseller. Haters Back Off followed on Netflix for two seasons in 2016 and 2017, with Ballinger as Miranda and a co-creator. The fictional diary My Diarrhe arrived in 2018, followed by the Netflix stage special Miranda Sings Live…Your Welcome in 2019.
Recent years.
Ballinger paused public activity in 2023 amid allegations of inappropriate conversations and interactions with underage fans. She denied grooming allegations and later apologised for past behaviour that had hurt people. Her recent work includes Colleen Vlogs uploads, a 2025 Tea Time interview and 2026 PITY PARTY! show listings.
