Mini bio

How it started.

Poor Rich Boy began in Lahore in 2008. Founders Shehzad Noor and Zain Ahsan first played as an acoustic duo, then expanded the group and performed at The Guitar School. Noor began writing with Umer “Duck” Khan, who had already been sharing songs online. One of those songs became Alice.

Finding their audience.

Alice and Fair Weather Friend helped the band build an audience before their five-song debut EP, Old Money, arrived in 2012. They recorded it themselves and marked its launch with shows at True Brew Records in Lahore. In a later interview, Khan recalled how the EP helped connect them with Mekaal Hasan and his studio.

Taking the songs further.

Their first US tour came through the Center Stage cultural exchange in June 2014. The band later developed a growing Urdu repertoire alongside their English songs. On Khudi Kya Hai?, Khan and Ahsan set poetry selected by Allama Iqbal’s grandson Walid Iqbal to music, in a project with Mekaal Hasan.

The partnership today.

Khan describes his part as words and harmonies, while Ahsan concentrates on production. Their recent work includes Confidence, the English album preview Mother’s Favourite, the Wasim Akram tribute Fan, Hitsong and the ZAKII collaboration Takiya.
