Mini bio
How it started.
Rahul grew up in Kolkata and came to the UK in 2010 on a scholarship to study optical metrology at Loughborough University. He joined the Nuclear AMRC in 2015 and began sharing cakes with colleagues. A work friend encouraged him to apply for Bake Off.
The tent changed things.
In 2018, he won series nine of The Great British Bake Off, collecting two Star Baker awards and the show’s first Hollywood Handshake for a Showstopper along the way. He returned to win the New Year special in 2021.
Science, flavour and sharing.
His recipes draw on the food he grew up with and the flavours he discovered in Britain. His debut book, Showstopping Cakes, arrived in October 2022, explaining decorating techniques and how to solve common baking problems. He also contributes to The Times’ food magazine.
More room to bake together.
In his first Monthly Mix newsletter in October 2025, Rahul introduced his new website and downloadable recipes. He also recalled baking on stage with Peter Sawkins at the Edinburgh Fringe that August. He lives in Rotherham with his wife Shreya and their daughter Deveshi.
