Mini bio

How it started.

Born in Saudi Arabia, Rutaba moved to Lahore in 2010 to study computer engineering. Singing in public at university opened a new path: producer Xulfi discovered her, and she began working as a backing vocalist on Nescafé Basement.

Finding Roots.

Roots reached the top three on Pepsi Battle of the Bands in 2017, bringing Rutaba’s voice to a wider audience. The band’s sound drew on electropop, synth-pop and progressive pop, while her solo work explored indie pop.

Songs of her own.

Her releases include Automatic Yellow with Talal Qureshi, the 2020 EP Shit I’ll Never Finish, and Anay Wala Kal/Ghubaray, which she conceptualised, composed and wrote. In 2022, she collaborated remotely with Indian singer Abhilasha Sinha on Nazar/Surma, a song about judgment, expectations and the freedom to be yourself.

Helping other voices travel.

Alongside her recording career, Rutaba works in artist development at Spotify. Her recent interviews focus on Pakistani music finding listeners around the world, practical support for independent musicians and better representation for women in music.
