Mini bio

How it started.

Saif grew up in Khairpur, surrounded by Sindh’s musical gatherings. In an interview, he recalled discovering music through shrine performances and meeting people from different backgrounds. The Sketches grew out of Jamshoro, pairing Sufi poetry and local folk traditions with a band sound.

Finding a wider audience.

The Sketches released their debut album, Dastkari, in 2010 and reached a wider audience through Coke Studio Season 4 in 2011. You followed in 2016, then Saanjhi in 2019. Their 2018 Coke Studio performance, Dastaan-e-Moomal Rano, used Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s poetry, with Saif sharing composition credit with Ashfaque Ahmed.

Making room for other voices.

Lahooti Live Sessions began in 2013 as rooftop gatherings where folk artists could perform and have their music recorded for the internet. The project grew into a music school and the Lahooti Melo festival. In 2016, the sessions also reached Indian television through Pepsi MTV Indies.

Listening to the land.

His work now also includes the Lahooti Karoonjhar Commune in Nagarparkar and the Echoes of Karoonjhar artist residency. These projects bring artists together with local custodians to explore the region’s songs, stories and relationship with the land.
