Mini bio
How it started.
Yuumei grew up in China drawing animals and moved to the United States at nine. She joined DeviantArt at twelve, sharing fan art and finding a community that helped her develop. At sixteen, the response to her animal-cruelty drawing Selfish showed her that art could change how people think.
Finding her direction.
At UC Berkeley, she initially intended to study biology or environmental science. The response to her 2009 comic 1000 Words helped convince her to switch to art. That same summer inspired Knite, whose dreamers put stars back into polluted skies. Publishers’ interest in those comics began her professional career.
Stories and objects.
Fisheye Placebo explores hackers and censorship in a surveillance state. Alongside comics, she designed the original Axent Wear cat-ear headphones, interlocking paper koi lanterns, and star projectors. In 2025 she moved from California to Sweden, where forest walks and foraging now inspire paintings.
