Mini bio

Before the cameras.

Ben built a life in Laurel with Erin before television came calling. He worked as a youth minister, studied history and made things from wood. Erin’s journal records his last Sunday in ministry in October 2014.

How fans found him.

A feature on the couple’s renovated Craftsman cottage in Southern Weddings, and the attention it drew on Instagram, put them on HGTV’s radar in 2014. Home Town brought their shared work to television: Erin’s eye for design alongside Ben’s carpentry, with Laurel’s old houses and neighbors at the center.

Building beyond the show.

In December 2016, Ben and Erin joined the Nowells and Rasberrys to reopen Laurel Mercantile. They added Scotsman General Store and Ben’s Woodshop in 2018, then Scotsman Manufacturing in 2021. Their own account of the business connects making goods locally with keeping skilled work in small towns.

More room for the craft.

Ben’s Workshop gave him space to share woodworking with celebrity guests, while Home Town Takeover extended the couple’s renovation work to other communities. He and Erin also told their story in the 2018 memoir Make Something Good Today.
