Mini bio

How it started.

Emeril grew up cooking with his mother, Hilda, in Fall River, Massachusetts. A teenage job at a Portuguese bakery taught him bread and pastry skills. He chose culinary school at Johnson & Wales over a music scholarship, then studied French cooking in Paris and Lyon.

Finding New Orleans.

He led the kitchen at Commander’s Palace before opening Emeril’s in the Warehouse District in 1990. His approach became known as New New Orleans cooking, bringing other cultures’ ingredients and techniques into Louisiana traditions.

Cooking for the camera.

Essence of Emeril helped him learn to connect with viewers. Emeril Live, launched in 1997, paired cooking with a band and a live audience. His newer series Emeril Cooks returns to New Orleans for dishes inspired by local people and their stories.

The next generation.

Emeril established his foundation in 2002 to support young people through food and education. At his flagship restaurant, his son E.J. now leads the kitchen. The restaurant earned two Michelin stars in November 2025.
