How it started.
Raised in Orlando, Essie moved to New York City to pursue fashion after being inspired by Toccara on America’s Next Top Model. They began posting outfits in 2012. Readers wanted to know where to shop, and those conversations grew into a community around personal style and body confidence.
From a hashtag to a gathering.
Golden Confidence gave underrepresented bodies a place to be seen. In 2015, Essie brought that online connection into a New York pool party where women could wear swimwear, make friends and enjoy themselves. Essie says the parties later helped inspire the pool-party scene in Shrill.
Making room in sneaker culture.
After noticing how rarely plus-size women appeared on sneaker pages, Essie teamed up with Katie Alexis to create Thick Laces. Their work connects a love of sneakers with the wish to see more kinds of women represented in streetwear.
