Mini bio
Before the rainbow bins.
Joanna grew up in Chapel Hill and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduating, she moved to San Francisco, where she developed a love of stationery and created a boutique greeting card line. She also ran an organizing business there before moving to Nashville.
One lunch changed things.
A mutual friend introduced Joanna and Clea Shearer in Nashville in 2015. Both wanted to build organizing businesses. Their first lunch lasted four hours, and they became business partners that day, setting up the name, logo, domain, and company paperwork that night.
From Instagram to television.
The Home Edit combined practical organization with interior styling and color. In an early interview, the founders credited celebrity projects, including Gwyneth Paltrow’s pantry, and their Instagram Stories with helping the business grow. Their work expanded into books and the Netflix series Get Organized with The Home Edit, followed by hosting ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
A new chapter.
Joanna and Clea announced in April 2026 that they had bought The Home Edit back after four years with Hello Sunshine. Their Group Chat newsletter now gives fans organizing ideas alongside home tours, personal routines, and updates on their friendship.
