Mini bio
How it started.
Maggie and her husband Colin moved to the Barossa Valley in 1973 to breed game birds. Their farm became the starting point for Pheasant Farm Restaurant, which opened in 1979. Seasonal ingredients and meals made from scratch helped it earn a devoted following and the 1991 Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant of the Year award.
From the farm to the screen.
After the restaurant closed in 1993, Maggie developed her food production and writing career. On The Cook and the Chef, she and Simon Bryant shared their different approaches to seasonal produce. Her books include Maggie’s Harvest, Maggie’s Kitchen and Maggie’s Verjuice Cookbook.
Food with purpose.
Maggie established her foundation in 2014 to improve food and dining for older people. In the 2024 documentary series Maggie Beer’s Big Mission, she worked with experts to change meals, dining spaces and daily life at an aged care home. That work continues through training and advocacy, with her foundation also expanding into food for older people living at home.
