Mini bio
Learning at home.
Myron grew up helping his father, Jack, at the family barbecue business in Georgia. In his Food & Travel interview, he recalled starting with errands at nine, then learning to cook and manage the pit as he got older.
The first contest.
After his father died in 1996, he entered a competition in Augusta to help promote his parents’ Jack’s Old South sauce. First places in whole hog and pork ribs, plus third in pork shoulder, gave him a reason to keep competing.
From contests to television.
As chief cook of Jack’s Old South, he built a career on the competition circuit. The team won Memphis in May grand championships in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2016 and 2021. BBQ Pitmasters brought his work to television audiences, where he became a familiar judge.
Sharing the craft.
His first cookbook, Smokin’ with Myron Mixon, became a New York Times bestseller. He followed it with more books, including BBQ Rules, BBQ&A and Keto BBQ, while teaching hands-on classes in Unadilla and sharing recipes online.
