Mini bio

How it started.

Born in Atlanta and raised in New Orleans, Normani moved with her family to Houston after Hurricane Katrina. In 2012, she auditioned for The X Factor USA as a solo performer and became part of Fifth Harmony.

Finding a solo voice.

Her 2018 duet with Khalid, “Love Lies,” reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. She followed it with Sam Smith collaboration “Dancing with a Stranger” and the 2019 solo single “Motivation.” Its video drew on her New Orleans roots and childhood dreams of performing.

Making Dopamine.

Normani released her first solo album, Dopamine, in 2024. Speaking to NPR, she described finding her own sound while supporting her parents through cancer treatment. The record draws on early 2000s R&B influences including Aaliyah and Missy Elliott, with collaborators including Gunna, James Blake and Cardi B.
