How it started.
Roel says a birthday barbecue sparked his fascination with fire, smoke and flavor. Cooking in the backyard became a hobby he shared on YouTube, then his full-time work. His early videos were filmed on a smartphone for friends and acquaintances, according to the team that later built his website.
Finding his audience.
His enthusiasm found viewers beyond the Netherlands, including in America. By August 2020, an idowa interview reported more than 400,000 YouTube subscribers. That year he published BBQ Magic, bringing his recipes and barbecue techniques into a cookbook.
From the backyard to television.
Roel joined BBQSTREET’s second summer season in 2021. In 2025, his own 24Kitchen series, BuitenGewoon BBQ, brought his outdoor cooking to television with meat, fish and vegetable dishes. On his official site, Willemijn handles planning and logistics while Jim edits the images.
A place for the recipes.
Roel and Willemijn worked with Enrise on a new PitmasterX recipe platform, which went live in May 2023. The aim was to give barbecue fans a place to find recipes and inspiration beyond social feeds.
