How it started.

Shanika taught herself to cook and bake, and began sharing recipes in 2016. In her Nielsen-Massey interview, she explained that postpartum health struggles led her to reduce dairy and gluten. With money tight and takeout out of reach, experimenting in the kitchen became both a practical solution and a creative outlet.

Finding her audience.

Orchids + Sweet Tea grew around comfort food with Jamaican and Southern influences, including vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options. Video became an important part of that growth. On the Eat Capture Share podcast, she discussed her move from food photography to videography and gaining 200,000 Instagram followers in two years.

From recipes to a cookbook.

Her first cookbook, Orchids & Sweet Tea: Plant-Forward Recipes with Jamaican Flavor & Southern Charm, arrived on October 26, 2021 through Victory Belt Publishing. Its more than 120 recipes bring a plant-forward approach to everyday comfort food and meals for special occasions.

A shared creative business.

Shanika develops recipes, styles dishes and directs the creative work for her brand. Her husband and business partner, Darnell, handles photography, videography and editing. Together they run Brooklyn’s Sweet Tea Productions. Her work also includes The Brooklyn Collection with Spice Tribe, whose Tuscan Marry Me blend grew out of her popular chicken and gnocchi recipes.
