Mini bio

How it started.

Uma learned the basics from her mother and mother-in-law, then picked up recipes and baking skills from friends. Packing school lunches for her children in northern India pushed her to try portable dishes they would enjoy. Her November 2014 introductory blog post set out to share those kitchen experiments with other parents.

A name from home.

Her children suggested Masterchefmom when she wanted a place online for her recipes. The family nickname became the name of a blog spanning traditional Indian dishes, snacks, baking and fusion food.

Finding a wider audience.

In 2017 she won Netflix Asia’s My Chef’s Table Instagram contest and the SAVEUR Readers’ Choice award for Best Food Instagram. Her work brought family cooking and regional Indian recipes to an international audience.

From kitchen to cookbook.

Published in July 2020, My Genius Lunch Box collected 50 vegetarian recipes for school days. Uma also styled and photographed the food herself. Her videos continue that practical approach, from getting idli batter right to making festive sweets.
