Mini bio
How it started.
Born in South Korea and adopted into a family in Kentwood, Michigan, Kristen showed an early interest in food. Her mother suggested culinary school, and she trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago. In Boston, she worked for Barbara Lynch at Stir and Menton.
The comeback.
Top Chef season 10 introduced her to a much wider audience. After elimination, she cooked her way back through Last Chance Kitchen and won the season in 2013. Years later, she returned as host, with her first season airing in 2024.
Food with a personal history.
Her first cookbook arrived in 2017, followed by Arlo Grey at The LINE Austin in 2018. The restaurant draws on her training, childhood and travels. Television took her further afield through Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend and Restaurants at the End of the World.
Finding her voice.
Her 2025 memoir, Accidentally on Purpose, explores adoption, identity, coming out and love alongside her life in kitchens and on television. She also mentors aspiring cooks as Escoffier’s Chef-in-Residence and created Kish Apéritif, bringing a chef’s approach to cocktail ingredients.
