Mini bio

Two friends and a webcam.

Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla became friends in sixth grade in Sacramento. Their early videos grew out of smosh.com before they found YouTube. In 2005, a lip-sync to the Pokémon theme song became their breakout, helping turn their homemade comedy into one of the platform’s early success stories.

An ensemble takes shape.

Smosh grew beyond its founding duo into a cast-driven comedy company. Its channels include Smosh, Smosh Pit and Smosh Games, with scripted sketches, improv challenges, gaming and podcasts. The founders also starred in Smosh: The Movie in 2015 and Ghostmates in 2016.

Back in their hands.

After a 2011 sale and Anthony’s departure in 2017, Smosh passed to Rhett & Link’s Mythical Entertainment in 2019. Ian and Anthony reunited to buy back a majority stake in June 2023. The independent collective now makes room for the ensemble alongside its founders, including projects such as Bit City, Spud Hut and live comedy events.
